This unit is about conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals are used when a situation/condition depends on another situation/condition that precedes it. It can be a zero conditional, when both situations/conditions are existing or entirely possible, to second, third and even mixed conditionals, when the first and second clauses in the second and third conditionals are in the same sentence. Reported speech is used when the direct speech of the first speaker is repeated by a second person, using the first speaker as a reference, without the use of quotation marks. Thus: Carol said, \"This topic is difficult.\" becomes: Carol said that this topic is difficult. Changes in tenses are used in forming reported sentences. I thought this topic was difficult to think about, despite being easy to use in ordinary speech. I had to think about my answers several times.
