Studying conditional tenses can be very confusing even to native speakers due to the need to accurately gauge the time references (and appropriate tenses) of the hypothetical situations that the conditional statement can reference. Very often as native speakers we say these things without thinking and if for some reason we use the wrong tense (and time reference) and are as a result misunderstood, we can simply add more information (explanation) to clarify. When studying this tense however, one has to have a clear knowledge of present, past and future tenses and the points in time that each of these reference. Surprisingly a detailed understanding of tenses is required for reported speech. However as a native speaker I can say that many of these \"correct\" tenses are not used in colloquial speech and we often do not say the correct thing but are still well understood.
