Most of the time a teacher can get information on students' progress, strengths and weaknesses by observing and monitoring their work in the classroom, though different types of evaluation may provide a teacher with more details on what should be paid more attention for.
There exist several methods of evaluation: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tests present the most frequently-used type of evaluation and can be subdivided into several types: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests and general external examination. Each type has its own targets: some focus more on evaluation of the student' level of English for certain purposes like working/studying abroad, some serve as a tool that helps a teacher to realize students' weaknesses and strengths.
