This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I learned about a variety of different teaching styles. I had no idea that there were such a large amount of teaching styles - and knowing that this list only scratches the surface. It was interesting to learn which teaching styles are arguably more effective than other forms of teaching. I also find it interested that lectures where the teacher takes up 90% of the talk time are incredibly less effective than other forms of teaching that involve conversation and interaction with classmates. This unit talks about two productive skills: speaking and writing. There are two different areas that we need to focus on during a speaking class: accuracy and fluency. Accuracy activities are usually controlled to ensure accurate reproduction of language while fluency activities are more concerned with the effectiveness and flow of the communication. When teaching writing skills, the teacher needs to consider those things: handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation and creative writing.
