This unit really touched a multitude of sore subjects for me. The main one being Speaking (public speaking). I have been scared stiff about speaking in front of groups of people, no matter the size, since middle school. This most likely stems from a combination of bullying/belittling by both my peers and my teachers, as well as a crippling fear of being wrong or making a mistake that would result in my being horribly embarrassed. This problem seems to have actually worsened with age, to the point that I have been diagnosed with moderate/severe social anxiety. As such I definitely understand how hard it can be to speak up in class and be the temporary center of attention. It feels like the walls are closing in on you and there is an invisible monster's hand literally squeezing the air out of your lungs until you are ready to pass out. It is truly a terrifying experience.
