Past tenses would need to use irregular and regular verb forms, and this could be confusing especially to those who are non-native speakers.
One trick that I love to use when teaching my students this tense is the usage of the helping verbs. Similar with the present tense, the past tense would require you to memorize the past forms of the helping verbs. For example, Simple Present Tense and Simple past tense would just require the past and present form of the verbs. But for the continuous tenses-present and past, they would require us to use is,are,be,am and was, were respectively plus -ing. and so on with the remaining tenses.
To conclude, it is important to teach students the basic rules and the usage because they might not remember the terminologies. Yet, it is important for them to learn how to use all of them.
