Unit 15 describes various ways of measuring English language ability. Placement tests are used to evaluate the skill level of an entering student. Progress tests keep students and teachers apprised of progress as well as current skill. Progress tests can help teachers recognize what needs more emphasis in lesson planning. Diagnostic tests are in-depth placement tests which help teachers see a student's current English skill and areas of difficulty requiring further attention. Practice tests are designed to help students pass other external tests which will be taken for special purposes such as college entry, to live and/or work where English is the predominant language, or to conduct business in English. Creating a thirty-minute progress test in Task 5 inspired online review of how these tests can be designed to measure particular skills at every skill level. Thank you.
