The four main present tenses in English are present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. Present simple is used to describe actions which are habitual, routine, permanent situations, facts, or directions. Present continuous is used to describe actions in progress while speaking, actions which frequently take place, temporary yet ongoing and repeated actions, developing situations, and actions which regularly take place at a point in time. Present perfect is used to describe finished actions which occurred at an indefinite time, actions carried out in an unfinished time period at the time speaking, and actions which began in the past and continue at the present. The present perfect continuous is used to describe the length of incomplete yet ongoing actions and to describe recently finished ongoing actions with a result in the present.
