Conditionals can be tricky for learners of English because understanding their form relies heavily on remembering the present and past tenses. It might be useful, depending on the student's first language to talk about the subjunctive mood at this point. I think a good engage exercise for conditional lessons would be to ask the students what their dreams for the future are and how they plan do go about achieving the. That is, to get them thinking in a hypothetical framework and then supporting that framework with necessary conditions.
A good way to approach teaching reported speech is to make sure the students have a good temporal anchor -- when is the person doing the reported speaking? Is it in the present or in the future?
