Teachers may want to structure class activities differently depending on whether the class is focused on teaching new vocabulary, grammar or language functions. New vocabulary and grammar is suited to a straight arrow class structure and language functions are suited to a patchwork structure. New vocabulary is selected based on a variety of different considerations, however words that are more frequently used would be considered more suitable, new vocabulary must be appropriate to the students and relevant to the topics covered in class. When learning new vocab students need to know the word meanings, use, grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. When learning new grammar students typically need to know meaning use, forms and patterns and spoken and written form. When learning language functions students need to learn language that is appropriate to the situation.
