There are a number of ways to access a student's language level: Tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests.
There are 6 types of tests:
Placement tests: These tests are designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability.
Progress tests: These tests are useful to let teachers and students know what language items need more work.
Diagnose tests: this is basically similar in content to placement tests, and are sometimes more extensive.
Practice tests: this should follow the format and the structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for.
General external tests: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC
Cambridge assessment: General English including KET, PET, FCE, ACE and CPE; Skills for life: This especially is tailored to the needs of those who have moved to Britain; Business English : BEC and BULATS.
