Unit 7 examines how to effectively deliver new vocabulary, grammar and other language concepts in the classroom. It stresses that students should be introduced to new language in a balanced and practicable way. The unit provides examples of ESA lesson plans that demonstrate how to incorporate activities into a functional lesson structure.
Teaching vocabulary involves making decisions about which words to teach. Introducing grammatical structures is determined mostly by the class level and course syllabus. The ‘straight arrow’ ESA lesson plan is typically used to teach grammar or vocabulary, whereas ‘boomerang’ or ‘patchwork’ ESA approaches are better suited for functions-based lessons.
In this unit, I learnt many different techniques and activities for presenting and practising vocabulary and grammar structures for each stage of the ESA lesson.
