Speaking and writing, both productive skills, are very different but share a need for balance between fluency and accuracy based activities. Accuracy based activities should tend to be during the study phase, and are focused on producing correct language. Fluency based activities should tend to be during the activate phase, and focus on creative language. In controlled activities, the focused is accuracy, and can involve drilling and prompting. In guided activities, the focus in accuracy with some creativity, so the teacher controls the output but the students choose the language they use. Finally, creative communication is fluency based and allows for free discussion and role play. When checking students' writing abilities, teachers should focus on handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and allow students some time for creative writing that they can truly engage with.
