This unit covered the teaching of receptive language skills, which are reading and listening. Different types of receptive skill use (skimming, scanning, detailed reading or listening) were described, as were their purposes. The importance of choosing appropriate texts was also discussed, and the strengths and weaknesses of both authentic and non-authentic texts, as well as interest-based texts were discussed. A sample lesson (ESA Patchwork) was also made available.This content went over the amount different teaching techniques for classrooms. It is interesting how effective different ways of teaching can be more effective for different classes. I learned there are different ways to conduct class such as engage, study, activate - and a combination and reordering of those three. It's hard to imagine the amount of variety that comes with teaching an ESL class and how each class is adjusted accordingly depending on the students.
