Conditionals are sentences containing qualifiers such as “if†or “whenâ€. A zero conditional uses the qualifier, and present tense and present tense. First conditional uses a qualifier + present simple + will. Second conditional uses qualifier + past simple + modal verb. Third conditional uses qualifier + past perfect + modal verb + “have†+ past participle. Mixed conditional combines first and second conditional clauses. These can be confusing for non-native speakers, especially when using tenses in the second conditional, which always refers to the future.
Reported speech, or indirect speech, differs grammatically from direct speech. The question word remains the same, but the verb form changes, and questions marks are omitted in reported questions, etc. Also, quotation marks are used to indicate direct speech, but are not used in reported speech.
