Ongoing feedback helps students to keep track of how they are doing. Doing tests helps both the student in this way and the teacber as well. As the teacher knows how the students are doing he/she knows if there are parts that need more attention and which things the students know and understand.
There are four different types of tests:
-placement tests (used to know at what level the student should study, done in advance of the course)
-progress tests (to check what the students remember and have forgotten, should test for all four skills)
-diagnostic tests (similar to placement tests, given at the start of a course to see what the students already know and help teh teacher to prepare lessons)
-practice tests (when the student will do a test outside the language school, a practice test can help prepare for this. the test should follow the structure and format of the external test)
