Unit 7 covered the areas of a language that you should address when teaching a new language. Language consists of vocabulary, grammar and functions. When teaching vocabulary, it is important to consider the frequency of use of the words and how applicable the vocabulary is to the target student population. A student's existing vocabulary can be understood as receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary. Receptive vocabulary is the pool of words that a student knows and may comprehend, but does not actively use. Students usually have a greater receptive vocabulary than productive vocabulary. Unit 7 helped bring to my awareness the functions of language, which could be useful in constructing lesson plans. Language can be used for inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting, etc. Additionally, Unit 7 briefly emphasized the importance of informal vs. formal language.
