Evaluating students' progress is essential for both students and teachers. It is helpful for teachers to give continuous feedback so that students can measure their progress throughout the course. Teachers will also likely desire (or be required by the school) to give a variety of tests. Placement tests are used to group students in to language levels. Diagnostic tests help teachers to measure what students' know at the beginning of a course. Progress tests measure how well students are learning the material covered in the course. Achievement tests may be given at the end of a term or course to measure the improvement of the students' language. Students may also desire to take external tests to prove their English proficiency for a school or employment application. Practice tests may be used to help students learn the format of external tests and gauge their readiness for such test.
