This unit covered teaching pronunciation and phonology. This is a very technical subject which is difficult for new learners and new teachers alike, especially as it can involve learning a new alphabet (the phonetic alphabet/script). Most native speakers have a hard time being aware of the nuances of intonation and pronunciation. There are three major types of intonation: falling/rising (can indicate a question or disagreement, etc., but overall indicates that a response is wanted from the listener), rising/falling (normal pattern), and flat (non-emphasis, not much to say). Stress is also very important, as stressing a different word in the same sentence can change its meaning entirely. Articulation techniques were shown using the parts of the human anatomy. Techniques for teaching intonation and pronunciation were presented. I look forward to doing tongue twisters with my students.
