This unit provides an overview of receptive skills, that is, reading and listening. Different skills necessary for understanding of the reading or listening material are mentioned and explained (predictive skills, scanning, skimming, reading/listening for detailed information, deduction from the context). It also deals with potential problems that can occur while teaching receptive skills and how to tackle them (for example, the problem of a lot of unfamiliar words can be solved by pre-teaching essential vocabulary). It gives ideas on how to create interest in topics to be covered (for example, in the engage phase, the teacher can discuss the topic with the students, show pictures, or the students can predict what the audio/text is about). In the end there is also a model of an ESA patchwork lesson as an example of successful translation of teaching receptive skills in the classroom.
