This unit presented two videos showing a teacher presenting to the same group of students the modal verb 'can'. The first video effectively demonstrates many of the wrong things to do in teaching a group - no praising, no effective eliciting, insufficient involvement, use of an inappropriate level of English, no explaining, no monitoring etc. The second lesson is, in contrast, very well organised and the students find the involving approach interesting and motivating. I found it extremely useful to see a 'live' example of a good and a bad lesson. I was particularly struck by some of the pronunciation issues of the group and impressed with the drilling approach which the teacher used to seek to improve the pronunciation of the students. Generally, I was impressed by the way the teacher involved all of the students and used humour and enthusiasm to motivate the group and build rapport.
