In this unit I learned about various types of assessments and evaluations. Assessments are designed to measure an ability, such as language ability. Evaluations are designed to make a judgement about a student's ability. Different types of assessments are more appropriate for different situations. A placement test will help teachers identify the starting level of ability for students so that they can be placed in appropriate courses based on ability level. Progress tests are given regularly and provide teachers and students with information about short term improvements in learning. Diagnostic tests provide detailed information about particular skills. Practice tests are tests from previous outside tests like the TOEFL or PET. Outside tests are usually administered by a large testing body, such as Cambridge or ETS. Assessments and evaluations should also be used to guide instruction.
