The importance of evaluation and testing of the students, initially to establish their entry level - placement testing then a diagnostic test to determine the students strengths and weaknesses and identify any gaps. This test will also help the teacher with the lesson planning and ensure that the students are getting the most out of the class.
During the term progress testing should be conducted on all 4 skills reading, listening, writing and speaking to determine if there are any areas of weakness that readdressing.
Practice testing should be used not only in preparation for real exams but also as a means of revisions.
There are a number of general external examinations. The three which perhaps are the most relevant to this level of teaching are
KET - Key English Test (entry level)
PET - Preliminary English Test
FCE - First Certificate English (equivalent to upper intermediate ESL)
