This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 12 examined the productive language skills and how to teach them. The two productive language skills are speaking and writing. Writing is often neglected in ESL teaching because to most students speaking seems more important. In order to fully function in an English speaking country though, writing is essential and there are many activities that can get students to enjoy learning how to write. Speaking activities are much more common. We can use accuracy and fluency based activities to give the students a balanced development of their speech.I learned a great deal about how student's learn and in what order they typically learn it in. Sometimes, as a teacher, I feel like I just know something so it's difficult to take a step back and break down the steps in your own mind so you can effectively teach someone else. I really enjoyed this unit because I feel as if I'm good at breaking things down for students already but it helped me by validating what I already do and teaching me even more skills to help my special needs students, speech students and bilingual (Yupik) speaking students.
