Teaching new language involves three areas: vocabulary, grammar, and functions. When teaching vocabulary, I need to explain its meaning, spelling, pronunciation, the grammar around it, its use, and its frequency. Grammar is similar; I need to explain its meaning, use, how we write vs. how we speak it, and any patterns around it. Teaching functions explains how they would express the grammar and vocabulary appropriately - their word choice combination and style of presentation. We need to teach all three so they know what words mean and are, how to structure a sentence properly, and how to express themselves in a clear and culturally acceptable way.
When structuring a lesson plan, I need to know what my objectives are which will form how much time I want to devote to playing around with the language, explaining something, analysing what they already know, and putting it into practice.
