This unit focused on the materials used by teachers in the classroom. Course books can often be a point of disagreement amongst educators. Course books offer a tested structure for the class, but may be out of date or not create an interest on the part of the students. Materials are divided into two categories, authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are things like newspapers and magazines. Created materials are created by the educator, like crossword puzzles.I have sometimes used the origin of a word in explaining the meaning of a word. I understand why it isn't generally encouraged because sometimes this can just confuse students, but other times the student requires more information upon which to \"hook\" the meaning in their mind. The origins of words often help with spelling hooks as well. But I really enjoyed the reminder of all of the different techniques you can use to introduce vocabulary as opposed to grammatical structures etc.
