This unit covers the importance of testing and evaluation in TESOL/TEFL classes. Placement tests are crucial to assess what level students are at in order to put them in the corresponding class level. Diagnostic tests are done at the start of a class term in order to see what needs to be covered and what students have already mastered. Progress tests are done throughout the term to see how well students have retained what has been taught and to work on things that have not been fully understood yet. Practice tests are tests that practice what has been studied so far in order for students to do well on the actual external exam that will follow the practice test. TESOL/TEFL teachers should also be aware that many students might continue to take higher level certificates, such as the Cambridge certificates, and should consequently try to help these students prepare for those examinations.
