Course books and lesson materials a generally divided into two categories: Authentic materials (menus, newspapers, songs, brochures. etc) and created materials, those created by the teacher to either supplement, replace or both, materials in the course book. Examples of created materials are word search puzzles, fill in the blank exercises, pictures stories, etc. Created materials can be graded to the level of the class whereas authentic material can't. There are many advantages to using a course book such as it provides a syllabus which is suited to the grade level, it continues practicing the language previous taught and usually the students expect to have one. It's disadvantages may be that it isn't always a \"match\" for the needs of all the students, teachers may not have a choice in the course book they must use, and then can tend to make the teacher lazy or the students bored.
