This unit was more about what we're actually going to teach rather than understanding the theory of things we might teach or might help us teach. This was about learning how to pinpoint what skills the students need to practice. Receptive skills are definitely the major focus of any ESL class taught by native speakers. Grammar and theory are important, and it is vital that a teacher understands them, but native speakers in a foreign country normally won't have to teach those skills to degree we've been studying in TEFL so far. Getting to understand what receptive skills are and everything that's entailed, i.e. scanning, skimming, authentic vs. non-authentic texts, etc: ESL teachers need to be prepared for this. We also need to know just how to promote those skills in the most effective and interesting ways, whatever the level of our students, which this unit covered succinctly and well.
