This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, I realised that learners studying in their own countries have limited opportunities to practice their English and apply it to everyday situations. I learned that there are many different teaching methodologies, such as grammar - translation, audio - lingualism, and task-based learning, and there is often heated debate about the most effective methods. The methodology used will largely depend on the circumstances. One method of ensuring that students stay motivated, receive exposure to the language and have a chance to use it is the engage, study and activate (ESA) method. Elicitation is one useful way to engage students as part of the ESA method. The steps of the ESA method don't always need to be followed in order, as you might return to do further activation in a so-called 'boomerang' lesson plan. I also read about a variety of activities that could be used in each stage.
