This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This was the most difficult unit to date for me. I had yet to be introduced to the International Phonemic Alphabet and feel I will have to print it off and do some intense studying to master it. I am happy to be exposed to the alphabet, however, I fear it will confuse many of my students. I think I need to study it myself and know it well before I try to teach it.
I was interested to learn the physiology of pronunciation and where voiced and unvoiced sounds hail from. The charts and diagrams were especially helpful in painting a complete picture of the articulation of sounds.
The part of the unit I enjoyed most was the material on Intonation, Stress, and Sound Joining. I think intonation and stress are crucially important when teaching speaking and listening to students. I also found it educational to really think about the sound joining that occurs when we speak versus when we listen.
