When I think about the difference between authentic and non-authentic materials, I can't help but wonder what portion of the lesson with beginner English learners has to be non-authentic workbooks and worksheets and what part authentic material perhaps gleaned from their own business? It would be helpful to have a handle on how to introduce grammar and to give adult learners the realistic situations that they may encounter in their jobs. If I introduce vocabulary and then some grammar, and want to ensure that the students have understood everything, then how much time do I really have to introduce faxes, work documents and have the students understand them? I guess I'm not sure I understand how to prepare a syllabus for a group of beginner business students that would allow me the time to teach both the grammar and ensure that students are able to use the language in their day to day work.
