This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, different approaches for teaching a second language are reviewed. Beginning with something like ‘Grammar-Translation’ (an older method) to something like ‘Community Language Learning’ (CLL), which is very discussion based and student led, the methods are explained and benefits/drawbacks are listed. It is also noted that all these methods can be useful or unnecessary depending on different situations. Overall, all teaching methods should use the ESA approach, which stands for Engage, Study, Activate. ESA should be used in ALL lessons; it will help students participate more and make learning more effective. For each different stage, approaches and ideas were listed for certain activities in each stage. Also, the topic of correction was touched upon, which explained the various types of correction (student-student) and when to acknowledge mistakes and errors.
