There are many reasons to evaluate and test students, and many ways to do it. The students' knowledge can be assessed by tutorials, student evaluations, and tests. There are many different types of tests and different times to implement them. For example, placement test are done in the beginning to see which level the student belongs, diagnostic tests are done to show what the students already know, progression tests can be used to see what the students have retained, practice tests are used to get students ready for a main test, external tests are prepared for in order to get a certification, and achievement/proficiency tests are done at the end of the year/course. There are many kinds of external tests: to prepare for an English university, working in an English country, or doing business in English. Preparing the students to be able to succeed with these test is key to their advancement.
