This unit covers how to teach pronunciation and phonology. The teaching of pronunciation is often neglected because it is not often taught in school and a rather abstract concept for native speakers, but this is an area which foreign students find quite difficult. The first part of the unit covers the different intonations used in speech, which is the normal rise/fall intonation, the fall/rise intonation to indicate that the speaker expects a response, and the flat intonation to show disinterest. Then the unit goes on to the topic of stress and how stress is used to give emphasis to particular words in a sentence to indicate different meanings. Stress in individual words is also covered. The phonemic alphabet is also introduced in the unit and teaching this can help learners find out the pronunciation of a word even from just looking up a dictionary. The topic of articulation is also covered.
