This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit talks of pronunciation and phonology.Under phonology it looks at intonation and makes it clear that the normal pattern for intonation in a statement is the rise/fall pattern. it goes further to look at the techniques for indicating and teaching intonation and mention points like:nonsense words, gesture, humming and singing and the board. It also looks at stress and the rules for stressing words. Not leaving out the techniques for indicating and teaching stress. Much more, it treats the phonetic alphabet and the phonemic symbols. It ends up with pronunciation and when it should be taught.
What i have learnt from this unit is that, pronunciation is probably the most probably neglected aspect of English language teaching. This is due to the fact that foreign teachers lack confidence to teach it methodically and English teachers sometimes lack the training and confidence to tackle this area.
