This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The unit has an in-depth look at four general student learning and development theories, ie, Environmentalist, Maturationists, Constructionist and others. There are many different theories but all fall under these four categories.
The unit also looks at language learning (things being taught) versus language acquisition (skills acquired through immersion in the language).
The unit has also helped me to understand different approaches and key points when working with learners aged 5-9 years and those aged 6-13 years. That both groups have and need special focus points, ie, 5-9 year old children enjoy singing and using their imagination and make believe, the older groups prefers peer interaction and avoid speaking in front of others. Knowing the pros and cons of the learning preference of particular age groups will help the teacher have greater impact in the learning process of the students.
