In Unit 7 language learning was broken down into Vocabulary, Grammar, and Functions. To be successfully understood, Students need to know the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation of the vocabulary. When teaching grammar, the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the spoken and written form need to be taught well.
The way vocabulary, grammar, and language functions are taught are also unique. Generally, vocabulary and grammar can be taught with the straight arrow ESA method while language functions are suited better by boomerang and patchwork type lessons.
Finally, the activities used for the Engage, Activate, and Study portions of a lesson plan vary by the goal subject material. For example, in the engage phase, one may use flashcards when teaching vocabulary, question and answer when teaching grammar, and group discussion when introducing language functions.
