This unit deals with the need for teachers to evaluate their students and the options available to do so. It is important for students to evaluate their own level and progress, achieved through tutorials, evaluation by other students, or tests at different stages of the course. Tests can be divided into: placement tests (level tests) where all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) are tested in a progressive manner; diagnostic tests which test the student's current strengths and weaknesses, aptitude and gaps in knowledge; progress tests, often required by the institution to test the four skills over different time frames, as well as class weaknesses; practice tests, which are used for revision purposes for internal and external exams, following the same style and content as the real exam, and external proficiency tests in General English, Business English and Academic English.
