This unit delves into phonology and its application to the teaching of pronunciation. The unit covers intonation, explaining how entire words in a sentence can be stressed as well as the syllables within words, but that word stress can change to produce different meanings, suggest different moods, or even encourage or discourage a response to a statement or question. This unit pairs phonemes with their associated sounds and explains at the linguistic level how different sounds are categorized according to where they are produced and how (with or without vibration of the vocal cords, with or without friction or explosive pushes of air, etc.) they are produced. I learned that mouth diagrams and exaggerating the formulation of sounds with my own mouth can be useful tools for teaching pronunciation, but that it is important to always end with a normal example so as to avoid confusing the students.
