This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit presents previous methodologies in teaching language, in particular, teaching English. Some of these methods are incorporated into TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), such as PPP - Presentation, Practice and Production, and Community Language Learning. However, the main method used for ESL is the ESA (Engage-Study-Activate) Method, and variations to this (e.g. the Boomerang ESA). In summary, the teacher should try to get the interest of the students through various techniques; then help them study the rules of grammar that support their comprehension/speech/writing; then actively use the language in various ways. I think it is an effective way to learn language, because it mimics the learning process of a child learning his/her primary language. However, finding the most effective technique within the stage, and the most effective sequence of ESA can be very challenging.
