Parts of speech are different elements based on their use and functions, words are categorised into several types or parts of speech. Each word plays a role in the sentence and has its own meaning. There are 8 parts of of speech in the English language: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions and these parts of speech refer to words that are used to name persons, things, animals, places, ideas, or events. These parts of speech are a very important part of the English language as they are unique to the language and are used differently to other languages. They can be complex and hard for a learner to understand as he/she compares to his/her own language, for example a French student will place an adjective after the noun and not before, therefore it is important that parts of speech are fully understood and put into practise as much as possible.
