There are two different types of materials: authentic and created. Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker would read or listen to. Authentic materials are usually more interesting and motivating and can give students confidence, but they are not appropriate for certain levels. Created materials are designed for students so they can be catered to particular groups of students and their level or interests. There are many advantages and disadvantages to using a course book. When deciding how to use a course book, the teacher can either omit, replace, supplement, or adapt parts of the book to be appropriate for their own students. When analyzing and choosing a course book, the teacher should consider the price, availability, design, methodology, skills practiced, difficulty, syllabus, topics, teacher's guide, and supplementary materials to find the best course book for their class.
