This unit focused on receptive skills - reading and listening - the different skills that they comprise, and methods for teaching them effectively. According to the text, there are different styles of reading and listening, which can be applied to different situations. They are: skimming, scanning, understanding from context, predictive skills, and getting detailed information. All of these skills are important for students, and can help them in a variety of ways.
It's become clear over the length of this course that a successful lesson is composed of a variety of elements: attitude, planning, effective teaching, and content. This unit really reinforced the idea that having interesting, relevant, and engaging content in the classroom is extremely important. A poorly-selected reading or listening passage can really drag down the atmosphere in the classroom, even if the lesson is taught flawlessly.
