This unit has covered the essentials of lesson planning. Generally, a lesson plan will have learning objective(s); timing (with specific time allocation for each part of the lesson); main theme of the lesson; language points to learn; procedure of the lesson to be followed; challenges the learners might encounter during the lesson; the phases of the lesson (Engage, Study, Activate); and the materials to be used (teaching/learning aids). The lesson plan is important in teaching mainly because, for instance, it provides a reference for the teacher to use during the lesson, gives structure to the lesson and keeps a record of the lesson for future use and even evaluation. It should, however, be flexible and need not be followed to the detail. The lesson plan is to be kept simple and concise. It should also cover different skills and activities, while remaining in line with the central lesson objective.
