The past tense follows on from the present tense in that there is a simple past tense, a past continuous tense, a past perfect tense and a past perfect continuous tense.
The past simple simply the verb plus \"ed\" for regular verbs or the past tense form for irregular verbs and is used for completed past actions where the time is given or when the time is asked about or when an action has taken place at a definitive time but the time is not given.
The past continuous tense is formed using was/were plus in \"ing\" form of the verb and is used for interrupted past actions and in descriptions. It almost always has a time reference except when being used when there is a general development that took place in the past.
