Wow, this unit was a doozy for me with regard to language. I have not, to my recollection, ever been taught the sub-categories of present tense. As a writer, I use all of them, but I had no idea that the auxillary verb I use (be or have) changes the type of present tense you are using, nor was I aware of the specific situations in which they are used. What I found most fascinating, however, were the common errors (not to be confused with mistakes!) that students make; these were the exact types of errors I notice in my students work, particularly this semester as I am teaching an international cohort of students a class focused on writing and research. The semester is almost over, but I think I might put together a packet for them on verb tenses and common errors students make before they turn in their final drafts. In some ways, this might be the most salient unit for my present teaching needs yet.
