Unit 2 provides an introduction and overview to different parts of speech that make up a sentence. While it is not expected of EFL teachers to be experts in English grammar, it is crucial for teachers to understand the basic functions of words in a sentence. Even though this unit is just an introduction, the complexities of English grammar is already very apparent with the many exceptions to grammar rules. For example, the standard rule to make a noun plural is to add -s or -es to the noun. But if the word ends in -y, such as the word family, the -y must be replaced with -i before adding -es to make the proper plural form: \"families\". The other exception are words such as foot that don't take -s or -es to become plural, but have to change the spelling completely to get the plural form: \"feet\". English grammar is certainly complicated and I look forward to learning more about it's rules and exceptions.
