In this unit I learnt that classroom management is the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly, relaxed manner and maintaining discipline. I learnt ways of using eye contact, gestures and voice to convey messages and enhance learning for the students. In this unit I reviewed the pros and cons to different student groupings (ie. whole-class, grouping, independent study, pair work and group work. I also learnt about different classroom arrangements (ie. orderly rows, circles and horseshoes and separate tables) and how arrangement largely depends on availability of space, types of chairs and tables, age of students, nationality and student personality. I learnt strategies to minimize board work to in order to avoid turning my back to students. Finally I learnt building rapport and maintaining discipline within the classroom plays an important part in a successful and enjoyable classroom.
