Conditionals are sentences containing if/when, refers to present, past and future possibilities. First conditional talks about a real situation in the future that is possible, probable once the condition has been satisfied. Second conditionals are present or future unreal, hypothetical situations that are not true now and possibly never will be true in the future. Third conditionals refer to a hyperthetical past action and the hyperthetical past result. Mixed conditionals combine second and third conditionals. Teaching ideas: split sentences, complete the conditional, chain conditionals and nuclear bunker role play. Reported speech and direct speech/ indirect speech. Verb tenses, changing from direct speech to reported speech. Pronouns, sentence structure and meaning change depending on the context . Time expressions, back shifting. Teaching ideas e.g.; intermediaries, reporting verbs and media interviews.
